Southwest Rapid Rewards Wanna Get Away Points Redemption Increase

The Southwest Rapid Rewards program sent me an email today about their upcoming points redemption increase for Wanna Get Away reward flight booking.

It looks like Wanna Get Away reward flight bookings will increase from 60 points per $1 to 70 points per $1 as of March 31, 2014.

Here is the email notification:

“We want to inform you of an upcoming change to the Rapid Rewards Program that will affect the number of points needed for reward travel.

Wanna Get Away reward flight bookings made on or after March 31, 2014, will require 70 points per dollar.

This is an increase from the 60 points per dollar currently required.

Anytime and Business Select reward flight redemption rates, as well as the points per dollar you earn when flying, will remain the same as they are today.”

This may affect how you redeem the current Southwest Rewards Card 50,000 Bonus Points Promotion, depending on when you redeem your points for your free flights.

If you redeem your 50,000 points for Wanna Get Away fares before March 31, 2014, the value of your points will be $833 toward Wanna Get Away fares.

If you redeem your 50,000 points for Wanna Get Away fares on or after March 31, 2014, the value of your points will be $714 toward Wanna Get Away fares.

The number of points required to redeem for reward flights may vary based on destination, time, day of travel, demand, fare class, point redemption rate, and other factors.

However, just keep in mind that Wanna Get Away reward flight bookings made on or after March 31, 2014, will require 70 points per dollar, an increase from the 60 points per dollar that is currently required.
