Hi,Bank of the West Checking Free iPod touch Promotion is a great offer to me. However, I wonder if I am qualified for this offer? I live in the southeast. When I am filling out the application, there’s no choice of my state?

  2. MaximizingMoney.com - July 21st, 2010 at 1:55 am

    Hello Ray,

This Bank of the West promo is available in the following states when you apply in person at your local branch: CA, CO, UT, WY, and NV.

The terms indicate that to apply online you must have a U.S. address, which seems to indicate that anyone in the U.S. can apply.

However, if you are attempting to apply online, and the application does not allow you to enter your state, or doesn’t provide your state as an option, then it may also be limited to those specific states for online applicants as well.

The Choice ATM Checking is only available in Arizona, California, Colorado, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Oregon, so if you’re trying to apply for that account, it’s definitely only for those specific states.

From reading further information that is provided on the Bank of the West website, it appears that accounts opened online are either assigned to the state that they are opened in for qualifying states or assigned to their online branch for other states, so it seems to once again give the impression that anybody in the U.S. can apply.

You can see what I’m referring to at the following link:

    https://www.bankofthewest.com/personal-banking/checking-accounts/disclosures.html

I’m sorry for the confusion or if you’re unable to open an account, and I hope this helps to clarify the situation.

    Thank you, Max

To qualify for this promotion, you MUST live in one of these states, where ‘Bank of the West’ has foot-print:

CA, CO, UT, WY, and NV

    period.

    Want a promotion cupon thankyou…

  5. MaximizingMoney.com - July 22nd, 2010 at 12:34 am

    Hello Jai,

I was wondering if you could clarify where you obtained this information, just for confirmation purposes.

I’ve contacted Bank of the West to try to confirm as well, but I was wondering if you also contacted customer service to receive this information.

I just find it confusing, because the terms indicate:

“Offer valid for qualifying accounts opened at participating branches in CA, CO, UT, WY, and NV or opened online.”

And the online application accepts the following states:

    Arizona
    California
    Colorado
    Idaho
    Iowa
    Kansas
    Minnesota
    Missouri
    Nebraska
    Nevada
    New Mexico
    North Dakota
    Oklahoma
    Oregon
    South Dakota
    Utah
    Washington
    Wisconsin
    Wyoming

So it appears like they are saying that you can open your account at branches in CA, CO, UT, WY, and NV, or open your account online, and the online application accepts all of those states, so it seems like you would be able to qualify for the bonus when opening an account online from one of those states.

I don’t know. I’m waiting on a reply from Bank of the West, although customer service can sometimes be confusing on these things as well, but I was just wondering if you also contacted customer service for confirmation.

Thanks for the information either way, I appreciate your help. Max

    Max,

I talked to 2 different customer service rep’s of Bank of the West @ 1-800-488-2265. Both of them said- people who do not live in the above 5 states – are NOT eligible for this promo.

But, please double check and share with us. I will be more than happy to apply, if I am eligible (though I live in a state where this bank has no foot print).

    Thanks,
    Jai.

  7. MaximizingMoney.com - July 22nd, 2010 at 10:35 pm

    Thanks Jai,

I’m still waiting for their reply via email at this point.

However, if you talked to 2 reps, then it must be correct, although it never hurts to see it in writing as well.

Oh well, at the least, they should update the terms just to clarify that detail further.

I really appreciate your help. Thank you very much. Max

  8. MaximizingMoney.com - July 26th, 2010 at 11:39 am

Hello Jai and anyone else who is interested,

I received a response from a Bank of the West customer service representative in regards to the eligible states for this offer.

    Here is their response below:

    Start Quote:

Thank you for your interest in the Bank of the West iPod touch checking account promotion.

Checking accounts opened online by customers who are new to Bank of the West and who reside in one of our footprint states will be eligible for the iPod touch offer if they satisfy the requirements. Bank of the West’s footprint states include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Bank of the West does not open any deposit accounts online for residents of any states that are not in the Bank of the West footprint regardless of any special offers.

In conjunction with this offer, qualifying customers residing in California, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming may visit their local Bank of the West branch to open an account and be eligible for the iPod touch offer.

This offer is valid for new personal checking accounts opened online from July 19 through September 3, 2010, and is subject to the additional terms and conditions indicated on our website.

Thank you for contacting Bank of the West. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you in the future.

    End Quote:

So at least according to this rep, it’s true that you must live in a footprint state, but that the footprint states of Bank of the West include all of those states that are listed above.

Whether or not this is absolutely true, I can’t be completely certain, and you might even receive different information from another rep, but this is the info I received via email.

This does seem to make sense according to their bonus offer terms though, because they indicate that you can qualify when you open an account online, and those are the same states that are accepted through the online application.

I hope this helps to further clarify the details of this bonus offer.

    Thank you, Max

    Max,

Thanks for sharing a detailed information on this.

They ended the promotion early and will not honor there orignial commitment. Horrible customer service too.

  11. hawks5999 - September 7th, 2010 at 2:06 pm

CC – do you mean they won’t honor opening by Sept. 3 or they are not honoring the promotion at all?

  12. Smithy - October 5th, 2010 at 11:18 am

So far I’ve had a good experience with the bank. They called me the other day to remind me that I have until the end of October to meet the requirements for the promotion for the iPod. As for signing up for the promotion. I signed up on Sept 3rd so they clearly didn’t end the promotion early in CA.

  13. Joe - October 17th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

I signed up before sept 3rd and ive been using the debit card alot at jack in the box but havent used my pin or signed anything.. do those transactions count to get the ipod?

  14. Patricia - October 29th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Just wanted to say, I chose the On line bill pay, I never thought I could learn to do this kind of banking, It was very easy, and so simple to do, So simple I compared it with two other accounts i currently have, And found I will only use bank of the west for all my On line bill pay. thanks, ( Bank of the west )for keeping thing simple. P.S I hope the i pod touch is as easy to use !

  15. jay - November 1st, 2010 at 1:22 pm

made few of the last 20 required transactions on 10/30 however since they posted on 11/1 they are now saying I missed the deadline and will not get the ipod touch. According to the requirement I COMPLETED 20 transactions by 10/31. Is this fair and anyone know if I can do anything?

  16. Jonathan - November 12th, 2010 at 7:43 pm

    Hi Jay,

I”m not sure if you’re the happy type of person or the mean type but either way, this is where you need to be mean (or at least pretend to if you really can’t). Tell them that you qualified, and that you hate to not recommend BoftheW to your friends AND you will not be a BankoftheW customer for life. When they hear this (aka business fear) they will do their best to give you what you need. I don’t guarantee this will work but at least it’s worth a try. Of course, no harsh words necessary, just tell them like you’re confronting someone. You don’t even have to raise your voice. Good luck!

  17. Brian - November 18th, 2010 at 6:05 pm

I opened an account because of this promotion. Whenever I use my card, I always run it as credit, rather than debit. I don’t even know my pin number.. will I still qualify for the ipod?

  18. Brian - November 18th, 2010 at 6:06 pm

one more question.. are they giving out 3rd gen ipod touch, or 4th gen?

  19. Sarah - December 2nd, 2010 at 5:08 pm

and on my account it was posted as 199.99. but from what i have read they are ingraved with bank of the west. I have not opened mine yet. I have tried to return it for store credit to upgrade to a larger memory but the model numbel is restricted to bank of the west only… so be careful if you do give as gifts as there may be engraving on it.

  39. Ron - April 6th, 2011 at 4:48 pm

well, called them in february after not having received it due to a relocation, and was told that they would ship it to my new address. another 2 months pass and STILL no ipod. now customer service is telling me that due to the lapse of time from when the promo ended, i now need to take it up with my local branch. GREAT!!! i actually closed the account shortly after qualifying for the promo BECAUSE of my local branch’s lousy service (don’t even get me started)! now i need to deal with them. this after $199 was reflected on my 1099 as earned revenue, and after i had been assured in february by amanda, a customer service manager, that a unit would be sent to my new address in a few weeks. oh well, wish me luck, guys….i’m glad i documented everything – at least small claims court is always an option…
