American Express Premium Car Rental Protection for U.S. Card Members

American Express offers Premium Car Rental Protection for all U.S.-based American Express card members, except corporate cards, for only $24.95 per rental.

You pay just 1 flat rate of $24.95 per rental for up to 42 consecutive days of coverage, and there is no charge to enroll your cards.

Premium Car Rental Protection offers up to $100,000 in primary theft and damage coverage, and you can make a claim without paying a deductible.

Of course, there is a Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance already built into eligible American Express Cards, but the main difference is that the Premium Car Rental Protection provides primary insurance while the default coverage only offers secondary insurance.

This basically means that if you use the Premium Car Rental Protection, then you will not need to make a claim on your personal policy if you are involved in an accident or theft.

On the other hand, if you use the default Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance provided by American Express, then you would be required to collect from your personal auto policy first, and then the secondary insurance would pay for any overage that is not covered by your personal auto policy.

Since you would then be filing a claim on your personal auto policy, this will likely result in your Auto Insurance Rates increasing as well.

You can always opt to get your insurance coverage directly from the car rental service, but full coverage usually costs a lot more than the $24.95 flat rate per rental offered by Premium Car Rental Protection, so that is how this option can also save you money.

Premium Car Rental Protection Details

Premium Car Rental Protection is primary insurance for theft of and damage to the rented vehicle, which means that you won’t have to use your own insurance first, or pay a deductible.

It’s important to note that there may occasionally be some instances in which your personal car insurance company could still be notified, such as if you caused an accident that resulted in changes to your driving history report.

The vehicle must be rented from a Rental Company, which is a commercial rental agency that rents passenger-type motor vehicles, but it does not include a company whose primary business is something other than renting cars, such as an auto body shop or a moving van company.

Excluded vehicles include: automobiles that have been customized or modified from the manufacturer’s factory specifications, except for driver’s assistance equipment for the physically challenged; any rented vehicle used for hire or commercial purposes; antique cars (cars over 20 years old or cars that have not been manufactured for over 10 years); limousines; and off-road vehicles, motorcycles, motorbikes, mopeds, recreational vehicles, golf or motorized carts, campers, moving trucks or moving vans, and trailers. Vehicles covered may vary by state.

If you are the basic card member, your other American Express card accounts, and any additional cards issued on those accounts, are automatically enrolled in the Premium Car Rental Protection Plan.

Any card accounts issued to you in the future, and additional cards on those accounts, will also be enrolled.

Cards that are not enrolled include corporate cards, additional cards enrolled independently, additional cards issued to you on someone else’s account, and any card issued by a third-party bank partner of American Express.

If you are the additional card member, coverage does not extend to other accounts you may have.

You are only covered on the account on which you have been issued the additional card.
