The Discover Open Road Card is a gas reward credit card that offers cash back rebates on gasoline purchases at any gas station as well as cash back rebates on all your other purchases.
This Discover gas rebate card offers a full 5% rebate on your gas and auto maintenance purchases and up to 1% on all of your other purchases, but the cash back rebates are based on a tiered system, so it is important to understand that you will not always receive the highest rebate for all of your purchases.
The Discover® Open RoadSM Card works like this for your gas and auto maintenance purchases. You earn a 5% rebate on your gas and auto maintenance purchases for up to $100 in spending each month with a limit of $1,200 in spending each year. Thereafter, you earn a 0.25% cash rebate for spending between $1,200 and $1,500 on gas and auto maintenance purchases each year, a 0.5% cash rebate for spending between $1,500 and $3,000 on gas and auto maintenance purchases each year, and a 1% cash rebate for spending over $3,000 on gas and auto maintenance purchases each year.
For all your other general purchases, you earn a 0.25% cash rebate for spending up to $1,500 each year, a 0.5% cash rebate for spending between $1,500 and $3,000 each year, and the full 1% rebate for spending over $3,000 each year. That means you won’t receive the full 1% rebate until you’ve spent over $3,000 each year, which means you’ll only earn $11.25 in rebates for your first $3,000 in general purchases.
Because of the tiered rebate system, the Discover Open Road Card is really only ideal if you spend around $100 per month on gasoline, which may be fine for many consumers, since you’ll then be able to take advantage of the full 5% rebate on gas purchases, which is more than most gas reward credit cards offer.
However, if you spend more in the range of $175 to $200 a month in gasoline purchases or greater, then you will probably be better off with the Chase PerfectCard Gas Rebate Credit Card, which offers a flat 3% cash rebate on all of your gas purchases and a 6% cash rebate on gas purchases for the first 90 days.
Consider this: If you spend $100 a month on gas, you will earn $60 in rebates per year with the Discover Open Road Card and only $36 per year with the Chase PerfectCard ($45 the first year only when including the 90 day bonus 6% rebate). On the other hand, if you spend $200 a month on gas, you will earn $65.25 per year with the Discover Open Road Card and $72 per year with the Chase PerfectCard ($90 the first year only). If you spend up to $150 or so a month on gas, you’ll still generally earn more with the Discover Open Road Card, but you just won’t be earning the full 5% on all of your gas purchases.
So if you spend $100 a month or less on gas, the Discover Open Road Card is ideal to use for your gas purchases, and it is still a great card for those who spend up to about $150 a month in gas, but we would recommend that you use this card strictly for your gas purchases, as the tiered cash rebates for general purchases really inhibits how much you can earn on all of your other general purchases, unless you spend well over $3,000 a year on your credit card, but even then, you’re better off considering one of these Cash Rebate Credit Cards.
However, there is one other advantage that the Discover Open Road Card offers over other cash reward cards. Rewards are redeemable in increments of $20, but you can up to double the amount of rewards you earn when you redeem your rebates through one of Discover’s partner merchants.
For example, if you earn $10 in rebates, you can get as much as $20 in rewards if you redeem your rebates for a gift card from select merchants. That means you can turn your 5% gas rebate into a 10% gas rebate just by redeeming your rebates for gift cards from select merchants including AMC Theatres, Borders, Ace Hardware, T.G.I Friday’s, Gap, Blockbuster, and many other brand name merchants.
That’s a really incredible way to increase your gas rewards, and no other gas rewards card offers a standard 10% rebate, so if you plan to spend about $100 a month in gas and want to redeem your rebates for double rewards in the form of merchant gift cards, the Discover Open Road Card is an excellent way to earn rewards for your gas purchases. Plus, there is no annual fee.
Even if you spend around $200 a month on gas, as long as you plan to double your rewards by redeeming them through the select merchants, you will still earn more in cash rewards with the Discover Open Road Card than you would with the Chase PerfectCard MasterCard.
