The Residence Inn Springfield South is a pet-friendly hotel that offers free hot breakfasts and free dinners when you visit the Land of Lincoln.
This Residence Inn by Marriott in Springfield, Illinois, opened on June 19, 2012, so it’s still a very new and clean hotel with top-quality amenities.
It’s within a few minutes drive to all of the local attractions like Lincoln’s home, the Presidential Library and Museum, and other historic sites, but it’s also outside of the city center in a quiet and relaxing environment.
This hotel is pet friendly with a non-refundable cleaning fee of $100, regardless of the number of dogs or how long you stay.
There is a large grassy dog-designated area next to the hotel for walking your pooch, plus there are huge undeveloped fields surrounding this hotel, so there’s definitely enough room for your dogs to get plenty of exercise.
A member of the hotel staff even put together a special welcome jar full of seemingly home-made treats that my 2 Chihuahuas were extremely thankful to receive.
Free Dinner and Breakfast
They offer free breakfast every day, which includes many hot items such as the Canadian-bacon and egg biscuits that were especially delicious as well as waffles, eggs, hot oatmeal, cereals, and a plethora of pastry treats.
The hotel also offers dinner socials from 6:00 to 7:30 every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night.
Dinners included grilled chicken and meatloaf during our stay with a variety of sides, salads, and healthy snacks as well.
These breakfasts and dinners are a great way to save money if you are traveling with kids, as they offer kid-friendly selections that parents will love as well.
New Hotel Equals Clean Hotel
Because the Residence Inn Springfield South is so new, it is extremely clean and well-equipped with modern features.
The gym, pool, and dining areas are very attractive, and our hotel room looked like it had never been used.
My only real complaint was that we had to take luke-warm showers each morning.
I’m not sure if this was due to us taking showers during heavy traffic hours in the morning or whether the hotel is trying to conserve energy, but we could never quite get the shower to provide the heat that we wanted, although it wasn’t necessarily cold by any means.
Time of Year to Visit
We visited Springfield in October, and there were really no crowds and no waiting times at any of the attractions.
However, Springfield is a popular tourist destination, and it can be especially busy during the height of summer, so it’s best to visit in Spring or Fall to avoid the crowds.
We did see a few school tours at Lincoln’s tomb, but they were well organized and moved through pretty quickly, so they didn’t bother us in any way.
Off the Beaten Path
One particular destination that we enjoy was about a 15-minute drive out of Springfield to the Camp Butler National Cemetery.
General William Tecumseh Sherman himself selected the site in 1861, and it was also the site of a prisoner of war camp where Confederate soldiers were held during the Civil War.
The Camp Butler National Cemetery is a historic, heartfelt, and peaceful location that was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
There were no tourists around to be seen during our visit.
If you like to take home something that reminds you of your trip, then Lincoln Apparel T-shirts featuring bold colors and radical images of Lincoln offer a unique, wearable memory or gift.
Made by local artist Chris Umhoefer and sold at Springfield Novelties and Gifts near the Old State Capitol building, these are some of the most unique Lincoln images around, if you’re looking for a T-shirt.
The Residence Inn Springfield South is a great place to stay when you visit the Land of Lincoln, especially to save extra money on meals if you are traveling with kids, or for a convenient location if you are traveling with pets.
You can also earn Marriott Rewards Points for your stay toward free hotel nights.
