Bluebird by American Express is offering a $50 account bonus credit when you open a new Bluebird account by June 30, 2014, and have 2 direct deposits of $250 or more each added to your Bluebird account by September 30, 2014.

We previously announced this offer on May 12th as part of the National Direct Deposit Month celebration in May, but American Express has now released an online link for the promotion and extended the offer to Bluebird accounts opened by June 30, 2014.

How To Get Your $50 Bluebird Account Bonus

1. Sign up for a new Bluebird account by June 30, 2014.

2. Activate your Bluebird card (permanent card).

3. Successfully enroll in Direct Deposit through your employer or government benefits provider.

4. Receive a minimum of 2 qualifying Direct Deposit transfers of $250 or more each to your Bluebird account, the second of which must post on or before September 30, 2014.

Check out this $50 Bluebird Account Bonus Page to qualify for this offer that is valid for new customers only.

Bluebird Account Promotional Details

A qualifying Direct Deposit is a recurring Direct Deposit of a paycheck or other regular monthly income electronically deposited by a payor into your Bluebird Account.

Transfers and loads from any other funding source (including P2P, debit card, cash, and bank accounts) do not qualify as transfers eligible to receive a credit.

Funds transferred via Direct Deposit generally post on the day Bluebird receives the transfer from your payor, but it may take several days for the transfer to post, so you must allow sufficient time for that process to occur in order for your second Direct Deposit to post on or before September 30, 2014.

It may take up to 2 pay cycles for the first Direct Deposit to appear in your Bluebird account.

A $50 statement credit will be posted to your Bluebird account within 1 day of satisfying the requirements.

There is a limit of 1 $50 credit per Bluebird account.

Subaccount holders are not eligible to earn a credit.

There is also a Serve $25 Account Bonus that only requires $25 in spending with no direct deposit needed.

Original Bluebird Promotional Announcement

This promotion was originally announced in a press release from American Express that I received on May 9, 2014, which includes a telephone number for a direct deposit hotline that you can also use to qualify for the $50 bonus.

You can call the hotline number at 855-306-7394 to sign up for a Bluebird account and set up your direct deposit for the $50 bonus.

Once you sign up for your direct deposit and the 2 $250 deposits go into your account, the $50 statement credit will automatically be deposited.

If for some reason you don’t receive the $50 bonus, you should be able to call Bluebird customer service to have the $50 bonus credited to your account, as long as you have met the qualifications.

Review the press release below for more details, as this offer may even be available to current Bluebird and Serve customers, as long as you haven’t set up a direct deposit prior to this promotion.

American Express Press Release:

National Direct Deposit Month 2014: American Express Survey Takes Financial Pulse

American Express Offers Direct Deposit Hotline and Incentives In May

May is National Direct Deposit Month and American Express is marking the event by shining a light on the payday habits of employed Americans through a national survey that examined beliefs and perceptions about payday spending, saving, direct deposit and prepaid card usage.

The survey found that just under one-half (49%) of employed Americans are enrolled in direct deposit with their employers.

Direct deposit is an important financial planning tool that gives people access to their funds immediately to help them move and manage their money better. Access to paycheck funds gives people the ability to make everyday purchases online or in-store when they need it most, pay bills online, and send money to friends and family. Direct deposit also saves valuable time, since people don’t need to wait in line to deposit or cash their checks, or to turn cash into check or money orders to pay important bills.

With nearly 70 million Americans underserved by traditional financial services, managing money can be cumbersome and expensive for many people. Millions of hardworking Americans rely on alternative financial services, like check cashers, pawnshops, money order services and payday lenders to manage and move money. In 2012, financially underserved Americans spent $89 billion in fees and interest.

Break the Cycle, Not the Bank

In recognition of National Direct Deposit Month, Manisha Thakor Founder and CEO of MoneyZen Wealth Management and co-author of “On My Own Two Feet” and “Get Financially Naked” has teamed up with American Express to help educate Americans about the benefits of using direct deposit and prepaid cards together.

“Direct deposit can save you money. Even a fee as ‘low’ as one percent for cashing your paycheck can result in your giving away hundreds of dollars each year,” said Ms. Thakor. “By having a portion of your paycheck direct deposited onto a high quality prepaid card like American Express Serve you can stop that fee leakage. You can then use your prepaid card to pay bills, shop, and even store your emergency fund and other planned expenses, thus enabling you to carefully track and monitor your spending and savings for increased control over your daily finances.”

Well Liked, Inherently Trusted, Under Used

The survey found that among people who use direct deposit, three in four (75%) people said it is as important as getting paid and more important than taking a vacation or getting a bonus. The majority of direct deposit users surveyed (77%) receive their paychecks one to two days faster than those receiving a paper check. Of all people (80%) surveyed, direct deposit is their preferred way to receive their tax refund.

A majority of people surveyed (68%) were not aware that direct deposit could be set up through their employer to deposit funds to a prepaid card for free, unrelated to one’s bank account. Prepaid, reloadable cards offer many features including direct deposit and online bill pay. American Express Serve, a full service, reloadable prepaid card was designed to make moving and managing money easier and more affordable for all. In addition to a low one-dollar monthly fee and the largest free cash reload network in the U.S., Serve also has free direct deposit, free online bill pay and a linked “Reserve,” to set aside money for future purchases.

Direct Deposit Month Offers and Incentives From American Express

During the month of May, a direct deposit hotline will be available for American Express Serve and Bluebird customers for assistance signing up for direct deposit of part or all of their paycheck directly to their Serve account. As always, direct deposit is free for Serve and Bluebird customers. Customers who call this hotline will be connected directly to a representative, without wait time or automated menus. The hotline number is 855-306-7394 and customers can also find the hotline number when they log in to their online account.

A special offer is also available for both Serve and Bluebird customers who have not previously enrolled in direct deposit. During the month of May, Serve and Bluebird customers who sign up for direct deposit will get a $50 Account credit after two direct deposits of $250 or more each are added to a Serve or Bluebird Account by July 31, 2014.

About the Survey

More than 2,700 employed adults across the U.S. responded to questions about direct deposit and paycheck preferences in a survey commissioned by American Express and conducted by Ebiquity. The survey was conducted online between April 2-8, 2014. The results reported in this fact sheet have an overall margin error of +/- 1.9 (total) at the 95% level of confidence.
