Chase Freedom Unlimited Card
The main benefit of Chase Freedom Unlimited over Chase Freedom Flex is that you earn unlimited 1.5% cash back on everything you buy automatically with no activation needed and no limitations.
With the Chase Freedom Unlimited Card, new card members get a $200 bonus after $500 in purchases within the first 3 months, and 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target and Walmart purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year ($600 cash back total).
In addition, you’ll always earn 5% on travel purchase through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 3% on dining at restaurants including takeout and eligible delivery services, and 3% on drugstore purchases.
All of your other purchases with Chase Freedom Unlimited will earn 1.5% cash back with no limitations and no activation is needed.
Your Chase Freedom cash back rewards do not expire, and there is no minimum to redeem for cash back in the form of statement credits, bank account credits, gift cards, travel, and other redemption options.
Chase Freedom Flex Card
The main benefit of Chase Freedom Flex over Chase Freedom Unlimited is that you earn a 5% quarterly bonus on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter that you activate. However, you only earn 1% cash back with Chase Freedom Flex on all of your everyday purchases, while Chase Freedom Unlimited offers 1.5% cash back on everyday purchases.
The Chase Freedom Flex Card also offers the $200 bonus after $500 in purchases within your first 3 months, but the main benefit of this card is that you get a 5% quarterly bonus on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in select bonus categories each quarter that you must activate to redeem, which is the same as the original Chase Freedom Credit Card, which is now discontinued for new applicants.
Other than the 5% quarterly bonus offered for Chase Freedom Flex Card members, the only other difference is that you’ll receive 1% cash back on all other purchases outside of the bonus categories, while the Chase Freedom Unlimited Card offers 1.5% cash back on all other purchases.
That being said, both Chase Freedom Flex and Unlimited Cards offer 5% cash back on grocery store purchases on up to $12,000 spend in the first year, 5% on travel purchase through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 3% on dining at restaurants including takeout and eligible delivery services, and 3% on drugstore purchases.

The main benefit of the Chase Freedom Student Card is that it’s designed for students who may not have an established credit history already, and you’ll earn a credit limit increase after making 5 monthly payments on time within 10 months from account opening when you meet certain credit criteria.
For students, the Chase Freedom Student Card offers a lower $50 bonus after your first purchase of any amount, but you also get $20 in good standing rewards after each account anniversary for up to 5 years, and you earn 1% cash back on all of your purchases, but there are otherwise no bonus earning categories (except for 5% cash back on Lyft rides for a limited time).
