I just opened a Chase Freedom card because of the $200 cash back offer (which I’d qualify for without changing my spending habits) and that they have no annual fee. American Express wouldn’t waive the annual $40 fee for my JetBlue card, and because I never carry a balance, I didn’t think it was worth it to pay them. I closed the card (instead of renewing for another year) and opened the Freedom card instead.
@Robert — it’s not in the bank’s interest to give away money, so they make you ask for it (by signing up). You don’t have to do it online, though — they’ll set it up over the phone if you remember to call. They’d probably even set you up in person at a branch. When I called to activate the Chase Freedom Card, the representative also signed me up for the 5% cash back — very helpful!
