I just opened a Chase Freedom card because of the $200 cash back offer (which I’d qualify for without changing my spending habits) and that they have no annual fee. American Express wouldn’t waive the annual $40 fee for my JetBlue card, and because I never carry a balance, I didn’t think it was worth it to pay them. I closed the card (instead of renewing for another year) and opened the Freedom card instead.

@Robert — it’s not in the bank’s interest to give away money, so they make you ask for it (by signing up). You don’t have to do it online, though — they’ll set it up over the phone if you remember to call. They’d probably even set you up in person at a branch. When I called to activate the Chase Freedom Card, the representative also signed me up for the 5% cash back — very helpful!

I think rotating categories are great!

I use them in addition to websites that offer cash back. For example one credit card may offer 5% back at Best Buy for one quarter. I use websites like ebates to get an additional 5% back so that i actually get 10% back.

I’ve saved a ton doing it that way. Check it out for yourself!

I think the Chase reward card is great. I do not like the categories like amazon.com or Kohl’s. To get special savings at Kohl’s you have to use their credit card so 5% categories doesn’t help. If you don’t shop .com places those categories don’t help. Select department stores, who counts for 5% and who doesn’t. Categories like gas, restaurants, groceries, movies these are the ones that really help to get 5%.
