The Sam’s Club MasterCard cards for consumers and businesses offer 5% cash back on your first $6,000 in gas purchases each year with no annual fee for Sam’s Club members.
If you already have a Sam’s Club membership, then this is a good way to earn 5% cash back on your gas purchases as well as 3% cash back on dining and travel and 1% cash back on all of your other purchases.
There is no annual fee, but a Sam’s Club membership is required.

5% Cash Back on Fuel at Sam’s Club and Gas Stations
For each calendar year, you will earn 5% cash back on your first $6,000 spent on fuel at U.S. and Puerto Rico Sam’s Club and Walmart fuel stations, and at gas stations located in the U.S. and Puerto Rico (excluding fuel stations located at or that are part of warehouse clubs and certain supercenters and supermarkets).
After your first $6,000 in gas purchases, you’ll earn 1% on these gas purchases for the remainder of that year.
Gas Stations are generally merchants identified by their MCC as Service Stations or Automated Fuel Dispensers.
Gas stations do not include merchants of aviation or other non- automotive fuels.
3% Cash Back on Restaurants and Travel Purchases
You will earn 3% cash back at restaurants located worldwide (excluding warehouse clubs other than Sam’s Club).
Restaurants are generally identified by their MCC as Restaurants, Drinking Places, Fast Food Places, and Caterers.
You will earn 3% cash back at travel merchants located worldwide (excluding warehouse clubs other than Sam’s Club).
Travel merchants are generally merchants identified by their MCC in categories such as Airlines, Rental Cars, Hotels, Passenger Rail Travel, Bus Lines, Cruise Lines, Timeshares, Travel Agencies, Travel Sites, and Tour Operators.
1% Cash Back on All Other Purchases
You will earn 1% cash back on all other eligible purchases.
About Merchant Category Codes (MCC)
The percentage rate of cash back rewards earned on an eligible purchase is determined by the merchant category code (MCC) associated with the purchase.
An MCC is a 4-digit classification code that is assigned to a merchant by the merchant’s payment card network or merchant processor based on the predominant business activity of the merchant.
The merchant’s MCC will determine whether a particular purchase qualifies for the higher category percentages earned for Gas Stations, Restaurants, or Travel as described above.
For example, a purchase of fuel made at the fuel station area of a grocery store may have a MCC identification as a type of merchant other than a gas station, and would therefore not qualify for the Gas Station Category Percentage.
$5,000 Annual Maximum in Cash Back Rewards
You can earn a maximum of $5,000 in cash back rewards in a calendar year.
Once you earn $5,000 in cash back rewards in a reward period, eligible purchases will not earn any more cash back rewards within that calendar year.
Eligible purchases on multiple card accounts for the same Sam’s Club member, including business and personal accounts, will be aggregated in determining the $5,000 maximum cash back per a reward period if such card accounts are owned by the same member or entity (as indicated by the same name or tax payer identification number), the card accounts have the same guarantor, and/or have an owner or guarantor in common.
Sam’s Club Card Cash Back Checks
Cash back checks are issued each February for the cash back earned during the previous calendar year.
Cash back rewards are forfeited if the Sam’s Club MasterCard account is not in good standing, if the Sam’s Club Membership terminates or lapses, or if the cash back earned in a calendar year is less than $5.
Cash back checks will be made payable to Sam’s Club and may be cashed only at a Sam’s Club location.

who the heck do you call to find out if the gas you have been purchasing is in fact adding up somewhere to check the places you purchase gas besides a sam’s club?
kathy moxley says

JoAnne Keltner says
I’d like to know where to check my cash back balance. I can’t find that anywhere on the Sam’s credit card site.
lol says
Well sounded good until you have to wait an entire year and the cashback is only good at Sams
Tony Cimarosti says
Does it include all purchases made at a gas station or just on fuel? How would they be able to tell if you paid $50 on fuel and $20 on snacks and drinks?
Pradeep says
Also, why do we have to wait for a year to redeem the rewards? That seems a downside to me!
Pradeep says
5% cashback on Gas all year seems like a pretty solid deal! But, is it worth taking the card for no signup bonus or other perks?
Kimberly says
Absolutely!
$6,000 in gas purchases x 5% = $300
$8,000 in restaurants and travel (which is probably low) x 3% = $240
$20,000 in other purchases (which is probably low) x 1% = $200
Total = $740
In addition… if you get the Sam’s Plus card, which is only $55 more per year, you get $10 back on every $500 spent at Sam’s, so if you spend at least $6,000 per year at Sam’s you’ll be saving money.
